Me at age 72
Me at age 72
(Vergroot/Enlarge)
We are integrating April Software's age progression software in a Flash movie. Visitors of Technopolis will get their picture taken and will see how they look at age 72.

The age progression software consists of a number of command line tools. We can't control them directly from Flash, so we use a Flash cookie (a local shared object) to communicate with the age progression software.
We write the command line parameters to the Flash cookie and then start up a little program with the exec fscommand. This will read the command line parameters from the Flash cookie and start up the actual age progression software. The in between program will also monitor the age progression software and write the status to a text file. This is textfile is being polled by Flash.
It sounds complicated and it actually is. This project has made me at least 5 years older. The main issue is syncronizing all the reading and writing. The other alternative was to use Director or to run a server which would control the age progression software. But since this kiosk is part of a large exhibition with all kiosk apps written in Flash, we choose to develop in Flash.

The display standing behind my colleague Bram is a 3D character we designed for an educational project. It is set there because the April software misinterpreted features in our wall with features of Bram's face when the picture taken is slightly overexposed.
